Safe smart meters are behind the UK's move to a greener future
7th August 2020
Smart meters have been much maligned in the media, but we’re passionate about setting the record straight.
In the third post in our series, we’re countering the myth that smart meters are dangerous to health.
This rumour’s widespread, but as Bjoern explains, smart meters are a perfectly safe technology. Read on to find out more about smart meters, health and safety.

Smart meters emit dangerous radiation which can harm humans and animals
The health and safety of our customers is paramount.
Smart meters use radio waves to communicate. While radio waves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, they are not dangerous to humans or animals.
Additionally, the level of exposure is lower than from other everyday devices, such as smart phones or home broadband equipment.
As Bjoern explains, Public Health England (PHE) has also carried out independent assessments of smart meters to establish whether they can cause health issues. The results were published in March 2017 and were peer reviewed. “Peer reviewed” means that the research has been reviewed by other independent experts, so you can be sure of the findings.
You can read more here about the PHE assessment and its findings.
Smart Energy GB is a government-backed body which helps to make clear the benefits of smart meters for the UK. They’ve also produced a short video which explains the findings of the PHE study:

As well as helping businesses to better understand their energy use and costs, smart meters will underpin the UK’s transition to a zero carbon, lower-cost energy future. Find out more about smart meters and the smart grid here.
Right now, we know that health and safety are more important than ever. That’s why we’ve committed to new safety measures during smart meter installation appointments, to help protect our partners, staff and customers.
